Over the past three years, farmers along the Chongqing-Hubei border have relied on generations-old experience to plant and harvest Youyou Grass, but their sales channels have always been strangled by middlemen. This March, a pilot project called "Big Data + Youyou Grass," launched by local agricultural bureaus in collaboration with several tech companies, completely rewrote the rules of the game on this land.
Our reporter visited the core production area of Youyou Grass at the junction of Wuxi in Chongqing and Enshi in Hubei. At six o'clock in the morning, a push notification from the "Youyou Grass Data Platform" popped up on grower Lao Chen's phone: Today's average purchase price of Youyou Grass in major traditional Chinese medicine markets nationwide is 32.5 yuan per kilogram, up 4.2% from last week, with the largest demand gap in the East China region. Lao Chen tapped the "Production-Sales Matching" function on the platform, and the system automatically recommended three buyers with the highest credibility ratings, along with estimated logistics costs and delivery times. "In the past, we sold our goods entirely at market fairs or through acquaintances, and prices were squeezed to the bone," Lao Chen said, pointing at his phone screen. "Now, big data tells me who offers the best price and who is most reliable. I can directly connect with end pharmaceutical factories and earn an extra two yuan per catty."
Behind this transformation lies the quiet operation of the "Youyou Grass Chongqing-Hubei Big Data Center." The center integrates over twenty types of data sources, including satellite remote sensing, weather forecasts, e-commerce transactions, and logistics trajectories. Director Wang demonstrated the system's backend to reporters: a heat map clearly shows the planting area, growth index, and pest and disease risk levels of Youyou Grass in the border region. "We can even predict the peak demand for Youyou Grass next quarter based on historical price data and consumption trends," Wang said. "Farmers can adjust their planting scale accordingly to avoid overproduction leading to unsold stock."
Data brings not only price transparency but also a deep restructuring of the industrial chain. At a Youyou Grass primary processing plant in Enshi, plant manager Sister Zhang told reporters that their drying and slicing equipment is now fully connected to IoT sensors, collecting temperature, humidity, and energy consumption data in real time. "The system automatically analyzes the optimal drying curve, reducing the loss rate from the original 8% to less than 2%," Zhang said, pointing to the data stream on the workshop's large screen. "This data is also fed back to the growing end, telling farmers which harvesting method yields fresh grass with the most stable moisture content."
However, big data is not a magic bullet. During the interviews, our reporter found that network coverage in some remote mountain areas remains unstable, and some elderly farmers are intimidated by smartphone operations. To address this, the project team specifically trained 30 "data liaisons," who ride motorcycles through villages to help seniors input planting data and interpret platform information. "For technology to take root, it ultimately relies on people," one liaison said to a reporter while helping a farmer photograph and upload a Youyou Grass sample.
The story of Youyou Grass is just one microcosm of China's agricultural digital transformation. When big data truly reaches the fields and workshops, it changes not only prices and efficiency but also the centuries-old sense of powerlessness farmers have felt in the market. According to the Chongqing-Hubei Big Data Center, the digital coverage rate of the Youyou Grass project is expected to reach 80% next year, with plans to replicate the model to other local specialty agricultural products. This land, once isolated by mountains, is now weaving a new distribution network with data.
