Recently, the launch ceremony for the "Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing Big Data Industry Alliance" was held in Enshi, Hubei Province. Representatives from agricultural departments, traditional Chinese medicine enterprises, and data technology companies from both Hubei and Chongqing gathered together, jointly announcing that they would rely on big data technology to digitally transform the entire chain of Youyou grass—from planting, harvesting, and processing to distribution. This is not just traditional agriculture "connecting to the internet," but a crucial step towards the high-quality development of a regional specialty Chinese medicine industry.
"In the past, buying Youyou grass was like gambling," an old herbal trader who has been in the business for twenty years on the Hubei-Chongqing border told reporters. "Which mountain had a large yield, which year had good quality—it all depended on word of mouth and legwork. Information was blocked, middlemen suppressed prices, farmers couldn't make money, and pharmaceutical factories couldn't secure a stable supply." This information asymmetry has long constrained the scaling and branding of the Youyou grass industry.
Big data is now becoming the sharp tool to break down these barriers. According to the alliance leader, the project will establish a monitoring network covering the growing environment of Youyou grass across Hubei and Chongqing, using satellite remote sensing and IoT sensors to collect key data such as altitude, soil, precipitation, and sunlight in real time. This data will be fed into a central "data lake," where algorithm models will predict yield and quality, and can even forecast pest and disease risks months in advance.

During interviews, reporters learned that network infrastructure in some mountainous areas is still inadequate, and some older farmers are apprehensive about digital tools. To address this, the alliance has launched a "Digital Farmer Training Program," teaching farmers hands-on how to use smart terminals.
