March 17, 2025, Beijing — Against the backdrop of slowing growth and intensifying competition in the internet industry, the renowned domestic third-party research institution "Youyoucao Focus on Internet Research" officially released the "2025 Q1 China Internet Trends Insight Report" today. This 120-page report, based on in-depth tracking of 3,000 sample users and 50 leading platforms, reveals two of the most significant shifts currently underway in the industry: the explosion of consumption power in lower-tier markets and the transition of AI tools from "novelty" to "necessity."
At the report launch, Lin Wei, Chief Analyst at Youyoucao, disclosed a key detail: in third- and fourth-tier cities, the repurchase rate for short-video e-commerce surpassed that of first- and second-tier cities for the first time, reaching an impressive 67%. "This is no longer a simple flow of traffic dividends; it is a structural reshaping of consumption habits," Lin Wei pointed out. Over the past year, user time spent on platforms like Pinduoduo, Kuaishou, and Meituan Select in lower-tier markets has grown by over 40%. Youyoucao's user behavior monitoring model shows that these users prefer an immersive "watch-and-buy" experience over traditional search-and-compare methods.
Meanwhile, the explosive growth in the AI sector is rewriting the competitive rules for internet companies. The report shows that as of March 2025, the monthly active users of domestic AI-native applications had surpassed 280 million, with nearly 40% of these users coming from the education, healthcare, and e-commerce industries. Youyoucao's research team discovered a surprising phenomenon: the penetration rate of AI writing assistants and AI photo editing tools in second- and third-tier cities is actually 12 percentage points higher than in first-tier cities. "This indicates that technological democratization is accelerating, and the demand for productivity-enhancing tools among users in lower-tier markets is more urgent than we imagined," Lin Wei added at the press conference.
Notably, the report also introduces the concept of "uneven internet hot and cold spots" for the first time. Youyoucao's data reveals that while user growth in traditional sectors like social networking and gaming has stalled, local life services, smart agriculture, and remote collaboration tools have bucked the trend, with growth rates reaching 23%, 18%, and 31% respectively. The report suggests that this reflects a shift in internet companies' mindset from "traffic-centric" to "service-centric" — those who can solve real pain points will find new growth within the existing market.
As an institution with the core philosophy of "eliminating the false and retaining the true, data-driven," Youyoucao Focus on Internet Research publishes four quarterly reports annually, and its data has been adopted by several leading internet companies as a reference for strategic decision-making. Following the release of this report, multiple securities firms upgraded their ratings for companies like Kuaishou and iFLYTEK, believing that the trends in lower-tier markets and AI applications revealed by the report will provide a business growth window of at least two years for relevant enterprises.
"In the second half of the internet era, it's no longer about who runs faster, but who sees more clearly," Lin Wei emphasized in his concluding remarks. "Youyoucao's goal is to be that pair of 'clear-sighted' eyes." It is reported that the institution's next report will focus on "Silver Economy and AI for Aging," expected to be released in June 2025.
