In the Wuling Mountains, straddling the border of western Hubei and eastern Chongqing, a quiet transformation driven by big data is reshaping the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry. Recently, the domestic TCM supply chain platform "Youyoucao E-Yu" officially launched its industrial big data platform, announcing plans to leverage data collection, intelligent analysis, and blockchain traceability technology to comprehensively digitize the cultivation, processing, and distribution of local authentic herbs such as Coptis chinensis (goldthread), Codonopsis pilosula (dangshen), and Gastrodia elata (tianma). This marks not only a milestone in the transition from traditional "herb fields" to "digital factories," but also signals that the TCM industry—long plagued by information asymmetry and drastic price fluctuations—has finally found a game-changer.

"We used to grow herbs purely based on experience and luck. What to plant and how much to plant each year was mostly just following the crowd," an elderly herb farmer with three decades of experience told reporters at the Youyoucao E-Yu demonstration base in Enshi, Hubei. This outdated model of "relying on the heavens and blindly expanding cultivation" has repeatedly led to price rollercoasters for local herbs, with low prices often hurting farmers. The big data system introduced by the Youyoucao E-Yu team is now fundamentally changing this situation.

According to the project leader, the platform integrates real-time transaction data from over 200 major TCM markets nationwide, meteorological satellite remote sensing data, and soil moisture monitoring data. Using this data, the system can model and predict herb price trends for the next three months, and in turn guide farmers in making planting plans. For example, the system's analysis revealed that due to extreme high temperatures last year, the output of Gastrodia elata in the Hubei-Chongqing border region is expected to drop by 15%, while market demand is rising due to pharmaceutical companies stocking up. Based on this finding, the platform promptly pushed expansion planting suggestions to contracted farmers and locked in guaranteed purchase prices. This "data + order" agricultural model has given herb farmers a sense of security in "producing on demand" for the first time.

"Youyoucao E-Yu's core competitiveness lies in breaking down the 'data silos' from the field to the pharmacy," noted an industry analyst who has long followed agricultural digitalization. In the past, the TCM distribution chain was lengthy, with middlemen adding layers of markup. Moreover, due to the lack of a unified quality traceability system, problems like adulteration and passing off inferior goods as high-quality ones were rampant. Leveraging blockchain technology, Youyoucao E-Yu has established a full-process digital archive for each batch of herbs, from seeds, fertilization, harvesting, and processing to logistics. Consumers can scan a QR code to view the herb's "life story," directly enhancing the brand credibility of the E-Yu production area. Currently, the platform has connected with over 120 local cooperatives, covering more than 80,000 mu (approximately 13,333 acres) of planted area.

At a processing workshop in Shizhu County, Chongqing, reporters observed workers grading and packaging dried Coptis chinensis. Unlike the past reliance on manual experience to judge quality, the workshop has now introduced an AI visual recognition system. Paired with a big data cloud platform, it can accurately grade herbs based on color, texture, and shape in milliseconds. "Big data not only solves the problem of 'what to plant,' but also addresses 'how to sell it,'" said the operations director of Youyoucao E-Yu. By analyzing pharmaceutical companies' procurement records and terminal pharmacy sales data, the platform can precisely match different grades of herbs to different buyers, thereby increasing the overall premium rate by approximately 18%.

However, this digital revolution has not been without challenges. Promoting big data applications in mountainous regions first faces obstacles such as network infrastructure and farmers' digital literacy. To address this, Youyoucao E-Yu has established a dedicated team of "data promoters" who go into villages to teach herb farmers, hand in hand, how to use a mobile applet—uploading planting information via voice input and photo capture. At the same time, in cooperation with local governments, they have set up data service stations in townships, transforming complex backend data into intuitive "planting calendars" and "price warning charts" that farmers can easily understand and use.

From a broader perspective, the practice of "Youyoucao E-Yu" represents a precise implementation of China's agricultural supply-side reform within the TCM sector. Using big data as a precise scalpel, it has effectively removed redundant links and information blind spots from the traditional TCM industry chain, enabling efficient dialogue between the production and consumption ends. As this model matures and is replicated in the E-Yu region, there is reason to believe that the future of TCM herb cultivation will no longer be a gamble, but a science grounded in evidence.
