Youyoucao E-Yu’s AI Practice in Action: A Smart Leap from Field to Storefront

In the Wuling Mountains region straddling Hubei and Chongqing, a regional agricultural leading enterprise named “Youyoucao E-Yu” is quietly sparking an AI-driven business transformation. The company, which focuses on the cultivation, processing, and chain operation of health-oriented stores for Chinese medicinal herbs, recently disclosed its practical path for deploying AI in real business scenarios, drawing industry attention.

“We’re not just playing with concepts; we’re making AI truly solve old problems like ‘relying on the weather for a harvest’ and ‘difficulties in managing people and controlling stores,’” Li Ming, the digitalization head of Youyoucao E-Yu, told reporters at the company’s planting base in Enshi. Behind him, rows of honeysuckle fields were equipped with newly installed IoT sensors and AI vision recognition systems, which were transmitting plant growth data in real time.

It is understood that Youyoucao E-Yu has adopted a “three-step” strategy for AI application. The first step is AI empowerment of the planting end. By deploying a deep learning-based pest and disease identification model, the system can issue warnings as soon as tiny lesions appear on leaves, achieving an accuracy rate of 92%. In the past, experienced farmers had to patrol each row manually; now, drone aerial photography combined with AI analysis can complete a health diagnosis of a hundred mu (about 16.5 acres) of fields in just half an hour. Base technician Zhang Shi exclaimed: “We used to rely entirely on the naked eye and experience; now, with a glance at my phone, I can see exactly where fertilizer is lacking or where pests are present—it’s crystal clear.”

The second step is AI optimization of the supply chain. Youyoucao E-Yu has introduced AI algorithms into the procurement and inventory management of Chinese medicinal herbs. Based on historical sales data, weather forecasts, and market price fluctuations, the system automatically generates procurement recommendations and warehousing allocation plans. During a round of herb price volatility last autumn, this system helped the company avoid potential losses of nearly 3 million yuan. Supply chain director Wang Lihua stated: “AI is no longer cold code; it has become the ‘co-pilot’ for our decision-making.”

What has drawn the most external interest is the third step: the use of AI at store terminals. Youyoucao E-Yu operates over 200 “Youyoucao” wellness experience stores nationwide. Previously, store operations heavily relied on the personal capabilities of store managers. Now, an AI customer flow analysis system can precisely identify the age, gender, and dwell time of incoming customers, and adjust product displays and sales pitches accordingly. At a flagship store in Chongqing’s Jiefangbei area, reporters observed that product labels on smart shelves automatically change prices and promotional information based on real-time sales data. Store manager Xiao Chen said: “The system can even predict weekend peak traffic and remind us in advance to stock up and schedule shifts.”

Youyoucao E-Yu’s AI transformation has not been without challenges. Initially, some veteran employees resisted the new system, believing that “machines are taking jobs.” In response, the company established “AI coach” positions, with young technical backbone staff providing one-on-one assistance to help frontline employees adapt. At the same time, management made it clear: AI is an auxiliary tool, not a replacement, and all key decisions still retain a manual review step.

“The case of Youyoucao E-Yu shows that traditional agricultural and retail enterprises can fully achieve ‘small but beautiful’ refined operations through AI,” an industry observer pointed out. Unlike the sweeping AI deployments of large internet companies, AI implementation in small and medium-sized enterprises focuses more on actual ROI and scenario adaptability. Youyoucao E-Yu’s practice offers a replicable model for regional brands in the middle of the industrial chain.

Currently, Youyoucao E-Yu is planning to further open its AI models to upstream partner farmers, creating a “shared AI” platform. Li Ming revealed that their next step is to attempt training a proprietary “Chinese medicine knowledge assistant” using large language models, to provide personalized wellness advice for store customers. From the fields to urban business districts, AI is redefining this company’s growth trajectory.
