In the deep autumn of Enshi, Hubei Province, at the Youyoucao E’yu medicinal herb base perched 1,200 meters above sea level, the person in charge, Lao Zhou, was staring at the screen displaying the “AI Planting Decision System.” On the screen, satellite cloud images, soil moisture sensor data, and a 72-hour weather forecast were synthesized by the AI model into a risk heatmap—clearly showing which plots needed early drainage and which seedlings required supplemental lighting. “In the past, we relied entirely on the experience of seasoned farmers. Now, AI turns that experience into algorithms, cutting costs by 30%,” Lao Zhou told reporters.
This is just one slice of Youyoucao E’yu’s “AI transformation.” As a regional leader in the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herb industry rooted in the Wuling Mountains, the company is embedding large models into the capillaries of traditional operations—from cultivation and processing to supply chain finance. Its practices offer a clear answer to a question troubling countless SMEs: AI is not exclusive to tech giants—how can grassroots businesses actually use it?
In Youyoucao E’yu’s “AI Quality Inspection Workshop,” reporters saw a herb sorting line retrofitted with industrial cameras and edge computing boxes. Previously, workers had to visually inspect Angelica and Codonopsis for mold and insect damage—a slow process with inconsistent standards. Now, a locally deployed visual large model can identify 200 herb slices per second, reducing the error rate from 5% (manual) to 0.3%. More crucially, the solution requires no expensive GPU servers—it runs on a standard gaming PC with two second-hand graphics cards, costing less than 80,000 yuan in total. “We did the math: the annual savings on manual inspection labor alone cover the investment,” said workshop director Master Li.
However, Youyoucao E’yu’s ambitions go beyond cost reduction. In its “AI Supply Chain Brain,” large models are rewriting the rules of the TCM industry. Traditionally, herb farmers sell to local collectors, who then pass the goods through multiple intermediaries to pharmaceutical factories—with middlemen siphoning off much of the profit. Youyoucao E’yu’s approach: using large models to scrape real-time national herb market prices, climate disaster warnings, and logistics capacity data, automatically generating optimal procurement strategies. When a sudden rainstorm in Yunnan reduces the yield of Panax notoginseng, the system immediately advises the procurement team to switch to alternative sources in Sichuan and calculates a hedging price range. “In the past, such decisions relied on the boss’s gut feeling. Now, AI flattens information asymmetry, allowing us to source directly from farmers and cut intermediary costs by 15%,” revealed Youyoucao E’yu CEO Zhang.
The driving force behind this transformation is an AI service provider called “ZhiCaoYun.” Its founder explained: “What we built for Youyoucao E’yu is not a general-purpose large model, but a ‘small model’ fine-tuned with industry data. For example, for herb quality grading, we fed it 100,000 photos of local herbs, and the model learned to recognize the unique ‘muddy-leg’ appearance of Wuling Mountain herbs—something a general large model cannot do.”
Notably, Youyoucao E’yu’s AI journey was not without challenges. Early on, they tried to directly adopt an AI middleware platform from an internet company, only to find it “didn’t fit”: the processing workshop had unstable network connections, causing inference latency of up to 10 seconds; farmers couldn’t navigate complex apps, leading to data collection interruptions. Later, the team compressed the model for mobile use and replaced the app with a WeChat mini-program, lowering the digital threshold. “For AI to take root, it has to learn to bend down first,” Zhang reflected.
Currently, Youyoucao E’yu’s AI system covers 3,000 mu (about 200 hectares) of planting bases, two processing plants, and five storage centers, processing over 20 TB of data annually. More far-reaching, this model is being replicated by more than 10 SMEs across Hubei and Chongqing. A local agriculture bureau official told reporters: “Youyoucao E’yu has proven one thing—in mountainous regions, AI is not a decorative gimmick but a tool to squeeze profit out of the cracks for businesses.”
As the interview wrapped up, Lao Zhou pointed to a newly installed solar-powered weather station at the base and said, “Next, we want AI to learn to predict herb price fluctuations, helping farmers sell at the peak.” This base, once reliant solely on “old-fashioned methods,” is now striving to use AI to reshape profit distribution across the entire TCM supply chain.
