He chuckled and said, "In the past, growing herbs meant relying on the weather. Now, I rely on data to make a living—it gives me a lot more confidence."
The "Youyou Grass" that Old Li mentioned is not some new species, but an agricultural big data platform spanning Hubei and Chongqing. Just last week, this project, jointly incubated by several agricultural technology companies and government data departments from both regions, officially released its "Digital Map of the Regional Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry." The core of this map is to transform fragmented information—previously scattered in fields, warehouses, and trading markets—into a "living map" that can guide production, dispatch logistics, and predict market trends through big data cleaning and modeling.
"The border area between Hubei and Chongqing, especially the Wuling Mountains and the Three Gorges Reservoir area, is recognized as a high-quality production zone for traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. However, it has long suffered from information asymmetry and a disconnect between production and sales," said Chen Da, the project leader for Youyou Grass and a former agricultural informatization engineer, at the launch event. "What we are doing is not just building a database; it's about turning data into a tool in farmers' hands and a reference for corporate decision-making." He gave an example: Last autumn, the price of Coptis chinensis in a county in northeastern Chongqing fluctuated sharply, with traditional buyers driving prices down. The Youyou Grass platform, by scraping real-time quotations from major national medicinal herb markets, logistics vehicle data, and origin inventory information, pushed an early warning signal to local cooperatives a week in advance and matched orders from several pharmaceutical companies in the main urban area of Chongqing. In the end, this batch of Coptis chinensis was sold at a price 12% higher than the local purchase price.
This model of "data running before the transaction" is changing the capillaries of agriculture in Hubei and Chongqing. In Lichuan, Hubei, a young man born in the 1990s who returned to his hometown to start a business used data analysis from Youyou Grass to discover that the local climate and soil conditions were very suitable for growing a niche herb called "Panax japonicus," and that market demand was spreading from coastal cities to the southwest. He decisively adjusted his planting structure. In the first year, the 20 mu he planted yielded a per-mu output value three times that of traditional crops. "Big data helped me avoid the most crowded track," he said.
More notably, the Youyou Grass platform does not operate in isolation. It integrates data on weather, transportation, and even consumer profile data from some e-commerce platforms. This means it can track everything from "what to plant" to "who is buying and how they consume it." For example, by analyzing search trends for "medicinal food packs" on an e-commerce platform, the platform found a surge in demand from young consumers in Guangdong and Jiangsu-Zhejiang areas for packs focusing on "dispelling dampness and strengthening the spleen." It then instructed growers in the Hubei-Chongqing production area to increase the intercropping ratio of Poria cocos and Coix seeds. This closed loop of "consumer end driving the production end" gives traditional agriculture a precise "market sense" for the first time.
Of course, putting data into practice has not been smooth sailing. Uneven network coverage in mountainous areas, distrust of smart devices among some elderly farmers, and administrative barriers to cross-provincial data sharing—these are the hard nuts the Youyou Grass team has to crack. Chen Da admitted, "In one village in northeastern Chongqing, we spent two weeks teaching farmers how to use voice input to query data. But once they see the results, the pace of adoption picks up." To date, the Youyou Grass platform has covered 12 counties and over 230 cooperatives in both Hubei and Chongqing, accumulating more than 500,000 pieces of industrial data.
Industry observers point out that the practice of Youyou Grass's Hubei-Chongqing big data project is essentially putting the "Digital China" strategy into practice at the most grassroots level in the fields. It does not pursue flashy algorithmic tricks, but uses the most down-to-earth methods—going into villages and households, connecting every link in the transaction chain—to refine the authenticity and usability of the data. While other platforms are still debating how to build a data middle platform, Youyou Grass has already proven that big data is not cold, hard code; it can be a hoe in a farmer's hand or a streetlamp in the eyes of a pharmaceutical company.
A spring rain pattered down. Old Li put away his phone and patted the dirt off his hands. He said he plans to expand his planting of Polygonatum sibiricum by another 5 mu this year, as long-term procurement contracts have already been signed on the platform. "Data used to feel like something abstract, but now it's more reliable than the weather forecast," he said.
