Deep in the mountains of Enshi, Hubei Province, a wild medicinal herb known as "Youyou Grass" is undergoing an unprecedented digital transformation. This is not a scene from a sci-fi movie, but a real industrial revolution taking place along the Hubei-Chongqing border. Recently, reporters learned from the "Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing Big Data Industry Summit" that Hubei and Chongqing will jointly build a big data traceability and trading platform centered on the regional specialty TCM herb "Youyou Grass," aiming to break the traditional dilemma where the industry "relies on weather for yield and on people for pricing."
"Youyou Grass" is not a fictional plant, but a local colloquial name for a perennial herbaceous medicinal herb, named for its slender leaves that sway in the wind. Widely distributed in the mountainous areas of western Hubei and eastern Chongqing, this herb has heat-clearing, detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects, and is commonly used by local Miao and Tujia healers. However, for years, the trade of Youyou Grass has remained fragmented, akin to a "market fair" model: farmers harvest based on experience, middlemen drive down prices with smooth talk, and pharmaceutical companies hesitate to purchase in bulk due to an inability to trace the product's origin.
"Last year, we conducted a survey. The annual output of Youyou Grass across the Hubei-Chongqing region is about 800 tons, but less than 30% actually enters the supply chains of legitimate pharmaceutical companies," an agriculture bureau official from Shizhu County, Chongqing, admitted to reporters at the summit. "The rest is either sold cheaply for rough processing or left to rot in the mountains." This resource waste caused by information asymmetry is precisely the pain point that big data aims to solve.
According to the "White Paper on the Development of TCM Big Data in Hubei and Chongqing" released at the summit, the two regions will jointly build a "Digital Twin Platform for the Entire Youyou Grass Industry Chain" within the next two years. The platform will integrate satellite remote sensing, IoT sensors, and blockchain technology to collect data across the entire chain, including planting area, growing environment, harvesting time, and processing procedures. In other words, every stalk of Youyou Grass, from sprouting to being used as medicine, will have an immutable "digital identity."
"This might sound a bit abstract, but for farmers, the most direct benefit is that their grass can be sold at a higher price," said Lao Chen, head of a TCM cooperative in Youyang County, Chongqing, calculating at the scene: Previously, the purchase price for fresh Youyou Grass was less than 5 yuan per jin. With big data certification proving its superior growing environment, zero pesticide residues, and scientifically timed harvest, the price could at least double. "Consumers in big cities are willing to pay a premium for 'traceability,' and pharmaceutical companies are willing to pay more for 'standardization.'"
In fact, big data's transformation of the Youyou Grass industry goes far beyond pricing. In Lichuan City, Hubei Province, a local pharmaceutical company has already attempted to use big data models to predict the optimal harvesting period for Youyou Grass. Traditionally, farmers would harvest centrally around the Dragon Boat Festival. However, big data analysis revealed that the peak content of active ingredients in Youyou Grass can vary by more than 15 days depending on altitude and slope aspect. By implementing precision harvesting, the company increased the extraction rate of medicinal components by 22% last year, directly boosting the average annual income of over 300 surrounding farming households by 12,000 yuan.
However, this "data revolution" also faces real-world challenges. During interviews, reporters found that the Hubei-Chongqing border area is mostly mountainous with relatively weak network infrastructure, and some farmers in remote villages still use feature phones. In response, the summit organizers stated that they will collaborate with the three major telecom operators to prioritize the construction of 5G base stations and IoT gateways in the main Youyou Grass production areas, and will launch "foolproof" data collection terminals. Farmers will only need to scan a QR code on the medicinal herbs with their phones, much like posting a video on Douyin, to complete data uploads.
"We are not afraid of being slow; we are afraid of heading in the wrong direction," emphasized a data science professor from Wuhan University involved in the project planning. "The Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing big data platform is not meant to replace human experience, but to turn experience into reusable data assets. In the future, a farmer in Chongqing can check the yield and prices of their counterparts in Hubei with one click, and a buyer in Hubei can track inventory in Chongqing bases in real-time. That is true regional synergy."
Notably, this industrial upgrade has also attracted capital attention. It is reported that several leading TCM companies and internet platforms have expressed investment intentions, planning to build "big data + TCM" industrial parks along the Hubei-Chongqing border. Once established, this area could not only become a distribution center for Youyou Grass but also a model for the digitalization of TCM in Southwest China.
From a wild weed in the deep mountains to a digital asset on a big data platform, the transformation of Youyou Grass's fate reflects a small but genuine slice of China's agricultural modernization. As the light of technology shines into the mountain valleys, industries once considered "too rustic" are growing a brand-new skeleton.
