Deep in the Wuling Mountains of Enshi, Hubei Province. At six in the morning, dew still clings to the leaves of the Youyoucao Eyu medicinal herb base, when base manager Lao Zhou’s phone lights up—an AI system has just pushed an alert: persistent rain expected in the next 48 hours, suggesting early harvest of mature Bai Sanqi (Panax notoginseng). This self-developed “Shennong Brain” system is quietly transforming the operational logic of this traditional Chinese medicinal herb company rooted in the border region of Hubei and Chongqing.

The name “Youyoucao Eyu” is no stranger to the local herbal medicine circle. As a regional leading enterprise integrating planting, processing, and sales, it supplies authentic herbs such as Coptis chinensis, Gastrodia elata, and Codonopsis pilosula to numerous well-known Chinese patent medicine manufacturers nationwide. Yet, like many traditional agricultural enterprises, its pain points are obvious: planting relies on experience, processing on feel, and sales on market conditions. It wasn’t until the end of 2023, when an internal AI transformation began, that this long-established pharma company started to show a different face.

“We aren’t chasing trends—we were forced into it,” said General Manager Li Ming bluntly in the company’s Enshi headquarters meeting room. In 2023, sharp fluctuations in medicinal herb prices, coupled with rising labor costs, severely squeezed Youyoucao Eyu’s profit margins. Under this pressure, the company decided to introduce AI technology, starting with the most basic links in the chain.

The first area to be “invaded” by AI was the planting end. In a seedling greenhouse at 1,200 meters above sea level, sensors collect real-time data on soil moisture, light intensity, and leaf temperature. An AI model, based on historical growth data and weather forecasts, automatically issues instructions for watering, fertilizing, and pesticide application. Lao Zhou said that previously, deciding when to harvest was all about “looking at the sky, the ground, and the leaves.” Now, AI can predict the optimal harvest window three days in advance. For Bai Sanqi alone, the loss rate has dropped by 18%.

What has drawn even more attention is Youyoucao Eyu’s AI application in processing. In a digital factory in the Enshi High-tech Zone, a sorting line led by an AI visual inspection system is in operation. A camera scans slices of medicinal herbs on the conveyor belt; the system can identify impurities, mold, or thickness deviations within 0.2 seconds and automatically remove substandard items. Quality supervisor Wang Jie told me that manual sorting could handle at most 200 kilograms per day, but now the AI system processes 800 kilograms, with the misjudgment rate nearly halved. “Machines don’t get tired, and they don’t get blurry-eyed from overtime,” she said.

But the changes brought by AI go far beyond efficiency. On the sales side, Youyoucao Eyu has built a price prediction model using natural language processing technology. It captures real-time transaction data, policy news, and climate information from 17 major medicinal herb markets nationwide, generating a price trend report for the coming week. Sales Director Zhang Lei gave an example: in March this year, the model warned that Coptis chinensis prices would rise due to drought in the main production area. The company promptly locked in inventory, earning over 3 million yuan more from that single market swing. “Before, we relied on phone calls to check prices; now, AI helps us see the trends,” he said.

Of course, the transformation has not been without setbacks. Initially, some veteran herb farmers dismissed AI’s instructions, believing that machines couldn’t understand “herbal properties.” The company responded by organizing a “man-machine competition”—comparing AI-recommended planting plans with the “old experience” of seasoned growers. After three months, the AI plan yielded 15% more output, winning over the farmers. Li Ming admitted that the hardest part of technology deployment isn’t the algorithm—it’s building trust.

Today, Youyoucao Eyu’s AI system covers seven core links from breeding to warehousing. The company also plans to open this system to surrounding cooperatives, driving the upgrade of the entire Wuling Mountain area’s medicinal herb industry. In the view of industry observers, this company’s experiment may offer a replicable model for how traditional agricultural enterprises can leverage AI: not a one-step “machine replacement of humans,” but a focused approach starting from the most painful points—using data to supplement experience and turning AI into a “new farm tool” for old hands.

The story of Youyoucao Eyu continues. In the morning mist among the mountains of Enshi, the herbs being precisely tended by AI are quietly growing. And this conversation between tradition and technology, experience and data, has only just begun.
