In the past, farmers along the Hubei-Chongqing border often worried while looking at the vast fields of Youyou grass (a local term for various genuine medicinal herbs) — what to plant, how much to plant, and where to sell were all based on experience and luck. Now, with the official launch of the 'Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing Big Data' platform, this is all changing.
'Before, when planting Coptis chinensis, a good market could earn you 20,000 yuan per mu, but a bad market wouldn't even cover the costs,' said Old Zhang, a medicinal herb farmer in Tuanbao Town, Lichuan City, squatting by the field ridge and pointing at the real-time data jumping on his phone screen. 'Now, with this big data platform, I can see real-time national market prices, inventory levels, and even predict next year's trends. I have a clear picture in my mind; planting herbs is no longer a gamble.'
The platform, named 'Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing Big Data', was jointly developed by several agricultural technology companies from Hubei and Chongqing provinces in collaboration with local governments. It integrates satellite remote sensing, IoT sensors, real-time data from trading markets, and price fluctuation information from major national medicinal herb distribution centers, covering the entire chain from planting and processing to circulation. The core of the platform is an attempt to solve the long-standing 'information island' problem in the traditional Chinese medicine industry — where production areas don't know the real demand of consumption areas, herb traders can't find stable, high-quality sources, and end-user pharmaceutical companies suffer from inconsistent herb quality.
'The Hubei-Chongqing border region is the core production area for many genuine medicinal herbs, but the industry chain has always been fragile,' said Wang Jianguo, the project leader and former agricultural informatization researcher, in an interview. 'Youyou grass, as a regional brand, was previously supported more by word-of-mouth and geographical indications. Now, we want to equip it with a 'digital engine' using big data, so that every single herb can be tracked, priced, and optimized from the field to the pharmacy.'
At the Coptis chinensis trading market in Shizhu, Chongqing, a reporter saw an electronic screen scrolling real-time monitoring data from the 'Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing Big Data' platform: the moisture content of Coptis from Lichuan, Hubei; the inventory days of Codonopsis pilosula from Fengjie, Chongqing; the purchasing index of major national medicinal herb markets... Old Li, the market manager, said that since connecting to the platform, out-of-town merchants have been visiting more frequently. 'They don't need to visit every production area one by one like before. With a quick check on their phones, they know where the good quality goods are and where the prices are fair.'
Big data brings more than just efficiency. At the experimental fields of the Enshi Prefecture Agricultural Science Institute, researchers are using soil, climate, and yield data accumulated by the platform to train predictive models. 'We are trying to use historical data to back-calculate the optimal sowing period and fertilization plan,' said Chen Min, a senior agronomist at the institute, pointing to sensors in the field. 'Take Panax japonicus, a type of Youyou grass, for example. It used to have extremely high requirements for its growing environment. Now, through big data analysis, we have found the optimal combination of altitude, temperature difference, and rainfall, increasing the yield per mu by nearly 30%.'
However, this 'data breakthrough' hasn't been entirely smooth sailing. Some elderly herb farmers are still resistant to smartphones and data analysis, and the high initial cost of hardware deployment for the platform has discouraged some small cooperatives. In response, the local government has introduced a 'data subsidy' policy: farmers who connect to the platform and upload genuine planting data can receive a special subsidy of 50 yuan per mu. Additionally, the platform has launched a 'voice broadcast' function, delivering daily market updates in the local dialect to lower the barrier to entry.
The value of 'Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing Big Data' was validated during this year's price fluctuations in medicinal herbs. In the first half of the year, due to abnormal weather, the yield of many Chinese medicinal herbs decreased nationwide, causing prices for some varieties to soar. However, farmers in the Hubei-Chongqing production areas, having adjusted their planting structures in advance based on platform warnings, not only avoided the risk of unsold stock but also sold their inventory at higher prices. A medicinal herb dealer from Wanzhou, Chongqing, lamented, 'We used to say that the medicinal herb market depends on the weather. Now it seems that the 'weather' has become data.'
From 'living at the mercy of the weather' to 'living off data', the story of Youyou grass is just a microcosm of China's agricultural digital transformation. But in this mountainous region on the Hubei-Chongqing border, it is tangibly changing the farmers' bottom line and the logic of the industry. Just like the eye-catching slogan on the platform's homepage: 'Let every Youyou grass grow within the data.'
