In the Wuling Mountains, straddling the border between Hubei and Chongqing, an agricultural technology company named "Youyoucao Eyu" is quietly sparking an experiment in blending traditional agriculture with artificial intelligence. The company, which focuses on Chinese herbal medicine cultivation and deep processing of ecological agricultural products, recently disclosed its phased achievements in AI implementation—from pest and disease warnings to supply chain optimization, AI is reshaping every link of this "grassroots" industry.

Stepping into Youyoucao Eyu's intelligent seedling base in Enshi, the most immediate impression is one of "unmanned operation." Dozens of sensors collect real-time data on soil moisture, light intensity, and leaf chlorophyll content, feeding into a backend AI model. Developed jointly with Huazhong Agricultural University, the model can predict frost or pest risks up to 72 hours in advance. "In the past, we relied on farmers' experience; now we rely on algorithms. Last autumn, AI successfully warned of a red spider mite outbreak, preventing losses on nearly 200 mu of Panax notoginseng seedlings," said Li Guohua, the base manager, pointing to a heat map on the large screen.

But AI's involvement goes beyond the fields. Zhang Mingda, founder of Youyoucao Eyu, emphasized in an internal meeting: "We are not trying to become a high-tech company; we want AI to serve the premium value of 'local specialties.'" To this end, the company built the "Eyu Bencao" digital platform, using natural language processing (NLP) technology to capture real-time prices, policy updates, and consumption trends from the national Chinese herbal medicine market. The system automatically generates procurement suggestions, such as "Due to abnormal rainfall in the production area for this batch of Poria cocos, it is recommended to lock in inventory early." This data-driven decision-making enabled Youyoucao Eyu to increase inventory turnover by 18% during last year's price fluctuations in Chinese herbal medicines.

Even more noteworthy is AI's application in brand marketing. Youyoucao Eyu's e-commerce team trained an AI customer service bot named "Dr. Herb." It can not only answer consumers' questions about the efficacy of medicinal herbs but also recommend personalized health regimens based on users' chat history. For example, when a user asks, "What should I drink after staying up late?" Dr. Herb suggests "Eyu-produced sour jujube seed and lily tea" based on the season and region, along with a traceability code. This combination of "smart guide plus traceability trust" boosted the company's repurchase rate on its Tmall flagship store from 12% to 27% in just three months.

However, the transformation has not been without challenges. Zhang Mingda admitted that the biggest obstacle came from frontline workers' "digital anxiety." "Many growers felt AI was coming to take their jobs. We spent a lot of effort on training, telling them AI is just an 'e-tool for farming.'" To address this, Youyoucao Eyu created a new role called "AI Agronomist," staffed by young people who understand both algorithms and farming. They regularly visit villages to teach farmers how to use a pest and disease identification mini-program on their phones. This "human-machine collaboration" model has yielded remarkable results in the chrysanthemum planting base in Youyang, Chongqing—AI recognition accuracy reached 93%, while farmer adoption rates exceeded 80%.

Industry observers note that Youyoucao Eyu's case represents a typical path for small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises leveraging AI: not pursuing flashy, all-encompassing "black tech," but focusing on specific pain points, such as cost reduction, risk warning, and customer loyalty. This stands in contrast to the aggressive "All in AI" strategies of many leading companies. Professor Chen Qiming from China Agricultural University commented, "In regions like Eyu, where the terrain is fragmented and the digital foundation is weak, implementing AI requires meticulous craftsmanship—not replacing people, but empowering them."

Looking ahead, Zhang Mingda revealed that Youyoucao Eyu is testing a computer vision-based "Chinese herbal medicine quality grading system," expected to go online in the second half of this year. Once launched, buyers will only need to scan the herbs with their phones, and AI will automatically determine the grade and provide a reference price, potentially ending the long-standing local practice of pricing "by eyesight and connections." From "living at the mercy of the weather" to "living by the numbers," a company from deep in the mountains is using AI to write another story of rural revitalization.
