‘Youyou Grass’ on the Hubei-Chongqing Border Goes Digital: One Wild Herb’s Data-Driven Journey

At six in the morning, in a mountain hollow where Enshi Prefecture in Hubei meets Wanzhou District in Chongqing, the mist had yet to lift. Tan Minggui, a 52-year-old herb farmer, crouched on a slope, holding a silver-leafed plant in his hand and carefully comparing it against his phone camera. On the other end of the screen, experts from the Institute of Chinese Medicinal Materials at Southwest University confirmed the maturity of the “Youyou grass” via live video—marking a definitive shift in the millennia-old “harvest by sight” tradition of the Hubei-Chongqing borderlands, now being rewritten by a vast data system.

“Youyou grass” is not a scientific name, but a local term used across the Hubei-Chongqing border area (including Enshi and Yichang in Hubei, and Wanzhou and Fengjie in Chongqing) for several medicinal Dendrobium species and rare herbs. For years, due to scattered production areas, uneven quality, and information asymmetry, this “golden leaf” hidden deep in the Wuling Mountains often ended up being sold at low prices as raw material to outside traders. But since the start of this summer, things have changed—a “Big Data Map of the Chinese Medicinal Materials Industry” covering 17 townships across the two provinces and municipalities has gone live, and “Youyou grass” is among the first batch of authentic medicinal herbs to be placed under full-chain digital management.

The birth of this map stems from a three-year “data odyssey.” Chen Mo, a data engineer at Hubei Chuqiao Agricultural Technology Co., the project’s lead developer, showed reporters their backend system: on the screen, dense clusters of dots represented 127 collection points across the Hubei-Chongqing border, each feeding back real-time data on soil moisture, light intensity, air temperature, and imagery of plant growth cycles. “In the past, farmers relied on experience; now we rely on algorithms,” Chen said, pointing to a fluctuating curve. “By comparing the past five years of meteorological data with market purchase prices, the system can predict yield and price fluctuation ranges for Youyou grass three months in advance—something unimaginable before.”

The value of data lies in breaking down barriers. At a shared processing workshop in Longju Town, Wanzhou District, Chongqing, reporters saw fresh Youyou grass that had just arrived from Wangying Town, Lichuan City, Hubei. Each bundle carried a QR code on its packaging; scanning it traced the herb back to the specific farmer, the GPS coordinates of the planting plot, and the harvest time. The workshop manager explained that thanks to this big data system, cooperatives on both sides of the Hubei-Chongqing border had, for the first time, achieved joint procurement and sales under “unified varieties, unified standards, and a unified brand.” During this year’s first harvest season, the farm-gate price for Youyou grass rose 18% year-on-year, while procurement costs for end-use pharmaceutical companies actually fell by 5%—because data matching had significantly boosted efficiency in logistics and quality inspection.

The deeper logic behind this transformation is the reshaping of trust mechanisms in traditional agriculture through big data. In the past, pharmaceutical companies feared buying adulterated or pesticide-contaminated herbs and often suppressed prices; farmers, worried about not getting fair value for quality goods, preferred to sell quickly at low prices. Now, the data platform in the Hubei-Chongqing border area has introduced blockchain-based evidence storage, leaving tamper-proof data fingerprints for every step from planting and fertilization to drying and packaging. A procurement director from Guizhou Bailing Group signed a three-year contract on the spot after an on-site visit, admitting: “What we value is not cheapness, but the certain future that the data represents.”

Of course, digital transformation does not happen overnight. In Taiyanghe Township, Enshi Prefecture, reporters noticed that some older herb farmers still struggled with smartphone operations. To address this, the project team trained 46 “digital herb farmer leaders,” who are both cultivation experts and data entry specialists. Tan Minggui, 52, is one of them. His daily routine now includes not only tending the herbs but also uploading weather and pest conditions via a mini-program. “I used to think this was just for show,” he said with a smile, “until last year when the system warned of a late-spring cold snap, and I covered the seedlings with film ahead of time, saving nearly three mu of plants.”

From being unknown in the deep mountains to having a “data footprint” in the cloud, the story of Youyou grass is a microcosm of rural revitalization in the Hubei-Chongqing borderlands. When big data truly reaches the fields, it brings not just higher prices, but a whole new way of organizing industry. To date, the data platform has attracted over 3,000 herb farmers from both regions, and by next year, the digital transaction volume of authentic medicinal herbs in the Hubei-Chongqing border area is expected to exceed 500 million yuan. The journey of one wild herb is now accelerating on the digital track.
