In the mountainous region of western Hubei in April, before the morning mist had fully cleared, the warehouse of the Youyoucao E-Yu (Hubei-Chongqing) Base was already bustling with activity. Unlike previous years, this spring's stocking-up operations were directed not only by experienced veterans but also by a newly launched AI decision-making system. Base manager Lao Zhou stood before a large screen, watching real-time data streams, and told reporters on site, "In the past, we guessed the market by feel; now AI turns our 'feel' into 'computing power.'"

This agricultural supply chain enterprise, rooted in Hubei and radiating into Chongqing, had operated traditionally for the past decade: relying on buyer feedback, wholesale market trends, and phone orders from long-standing clients. However, in the last two years, the penetration of fresh e-commerce has surged rapidly along the Hubei-Chongqing border, and consumers' patience for "order today, on the table tomorrow" has grown increasingly thin. Lao Zhou realized that relying on manual statistics and phone communication could no longer keep pace with the speed of shelf replenishment.

The turning point came early this year. The Youyoucao E-Yu Base partnered with an agricultural technology company to embed AI into core business operations. The first step was demand forecasting. The system integrated three years of historical sales data from the region, weather and meteorological data, and even scraped real-time hot search terms from local community group-buying platforms. The AI model could predict two weeks in advance which township's potatoes would sell well and which street's citrus needed increased stock. Lao Zhou gave an example: "Last month, continuous rain hit Wanzhou, Chongqing. The system warned early that demand for leafy greens would rise, so we rushed to ship supplies from Enshi overnight. Three days later, when the market indeed ran short, we were the only supplier with stock."

Next came quality control and sorting. Previously, manual visual inspection determined the size, color, and blemishes of produce, which was inefficient and inconsistent. The base has now introduced an AI visual sorting line, where cameras capture hundreds of images per second, using deep learning models to 'examine' each piece of fruit. Lao Zhou said that after the system went live, the spoilage rate dropped by 18%, and more importantly, customer complaint rates nearly fell to zero. "In the past, when we shipped a box of fruit, there were always a few with poor appearance. Now AI is stricter than humans."

The value of AI is also evident in logistics scheduling. The E-Yu region is full of mountain roads and complex traffic conditions; previously, delivery routes depended entirely on drivers' experience, often leading to detours or delays due to congestion. Now, the dispatch system dynamically plans optimal routes by combining real-time traffic data and order density, increasing the number of delivery trips per vehicle per day by nearly 30%. Lao Zhou calculated: "Fuel costs are saved, time is saved, and most importantly, goods arrive fresher, so supermarkets give us higher rebates."

However, introducing AI was not without challenges. Lao Zhou admitted that the team initially resisted, with veteran workers feeling that "machines would take their jobs." But in practice, they found that AI handles repetitive, data-driven tasks, while the negotiation skills and local farmer knowledge of the veterans remain irreplaceable. Now, the base operates on a 'human-machine collaboration' model: AI proposes solutions, humans make decisions, and veteran workers provide the final check. This approach has not only avoided layoffs but, thanks to business growth, has created over a dozen new local jobs.

Under the demonstration effect of the Youyoucao E-Yu Base, agricultural cooperatives in surrounding counties have also begun consulting on AI system implementation. An official from the local agricultural department noted that the upward movement of agricultural products from the E-Yu mountainous areas has long been hampered by information asymmetry and low circulation efficiency. Youyoucao's exploration offers a replicable path—'using AI to deliver the good things from the mountains to urban dining tables faster and more accurately.'

As night fell, the base's electronic screens remained lit, with the AI model generating new procurement lists for tomorrow's orders. Lao Zhou stood at the gate, watching fully loaded trucks leave the park, and told reporters, "Technology, when used well, is productivity. At Youyoucao, we want every leaf in E-Yu to grow in the soil of data."
