Three months later, its operating costs dropped by 18%, and order response time was reduced from two days to four hours. This case is becoming a sample for traditional enterprises in the border area between Hubei and Chongqing to observe AI implementation.
"We are not a tech company, and there is no need to chase those concepts," said Tan Ming, the head of Youyoucao Eyu, during an interview at the factory, pointing to an AI visual sorting line in operation. This production line, equipped with cameras and a locally deployed lightweight model, can identify different grades of Chinese herbal medicines in real time with an accuracy rate exceeding 95%. In the past, this task relied on the naked-eye judgment of skilled workers, which was not only inefficient but also prone to quality control fluctuations due to staff turnover. Tan Ming admitted that when the team first came into contact with AI, they also took detours—purchasing expensive cloud computing services and attempting to have engineers train models from scratch, which burned money without visible returns. Later, they adjusted their strategy, switching to fine-tuning open-source models and focusing only on the three most pain-point scenarios.
The transformation of Youyoucao Eyu reflects the common difficulties faced by regional enterprises in using AI: lack of talent, lack of data, and lack of a clear path. An expert from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology pointed out at a recent industry salon that the biggest obstacle to AI application for SMEs is not the technology itself, but "not knowing where to start." He observed that approaches like Youyoucao Eyu's, which break through from a single business link and then gradually expand, are more sustainable than blindly pursuing "comprehensive intelligence." In fact, this company is now also experimenting with AI to generate marketing copy for distributors in different regions and using natural language processing to automatically organize farmer feedback, but these are all built on the basis of successful validation in the earlier sorting scenario.
It is worth noting that the case of Youyoucao Eyu is not an isolated one. In Qianjiang, Chongqing, a cured meat food company uses AI to predict sales fluctuations in different regions to adjust production plans; in Yichang, Hubei, a citrus cooperative uses image recognition technology to grade fruits and directly connect with high-end supermarkets. What these enterprises have in common is that they do not blindly believe in large models, do not rely on external consulting firms, and instead let frontline employees participate in defining problems. Tan Ming said, "AI is not magic; it just digitizes the experience of master workers. Our most valuable asset is actually those agricultural technicians who have worked in the fields for twenty years—they know what the real problems that need solving are."
Of course, risks still exist. Data security, algorithm bias, and the sunk costs of initial investment are all hurdles that regional enterprises must face. Youyoucao Eyu's approach is to first rent cloud services for small-scale testing, and only after confirming the effect do they purchase localized equipment. At the same time, they cooperate with local vocational colleges to cultivate composite talents who understand both agriculture and basic AI operations. Tan Ming believes that in the next two years, AI will become a standard configuration for enterprises just like computers and smartphones, but the premise is "first find the small entry point that can save you real money."
Looking out from the factory in the Wuling Mountain area, the rolling fields of medicinal herbs are faintly visible in the mist. For more enterprises like Youyoucao Eyu, AI transformation is not a display of skills, but a pragmatic practice about efficiency and survival. Their experience may offer a revelation to those regional peers still on the sidelines: rather than waiting for a standard answer, it is better to start with the most painful link.
