Deep in the mountainous border region between western Hubei and eastern Chongqing, a wild herb known as "Youyoucao" is quietly undergoing a transformation from a traditional craft to a digital economy. In the past, it was merely a mountain product carried in the bamboo baskets of Tujia herbal farmers; today, powered by a big data engine, its roots, leaves, and even every frame of its growth cycle have been converted into quantifiable, traceable, and tradable digital assets.
The catalyst for this change was an accidental "data collision." In the autumn of 2023, an agricultural technology company from Chongqing was collecting samples in Lichuan City, Enshi Prefecture, when it discovered that the medicinal compound content of Youyoucao dried by local farmers differed significantly from varieties in the Youyang area of southeastern Chongqing. However, in traditional trading, this difference was flattened by the "mixed-grade" model, making it impossible to achieve premium prices for superior quality. "We thought then, can we use data to 'nail down' this difference, so good products can fetch good prices?" recalled Li Wei, the project leader.
Subsequently, the company, together with the Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Southwest University, officially launched the "Youyoucao Hubei-Chongqing Big Data Platform." The platform deployed over 200 IoT sensor nodes across 12 core production areas in western Hubei and eastern Chongqing, collecting real-time data on soil pH, air humidity, light intensity, and growth imagery of Youyoucao. Simultaneously, the platform integrated local public data on weather, transportation, and e-commerce logistics, constructing a digital map covering the entire chain from "planting, harvesting, processing, to distribution."
"Harvesting used to rely entirely on eyesight; now, just look at the screen," said Tan Minghua, a large-scale grower from Baiyangba Town, Lichuan City, pulling out his phone to show a reporter the "data dashboard" on the platform. On the screen, his farm's Youyoucao was marked as "Grade A-3" with a detailed inspection report: flavonoid compound content at 3.2%, 15% higher than the market average. Tan said that this year, his Youyoucao was pre-ordered by a pharmaceutical company in Guangzhou at a 20% premium before it even left the ground. "Data is the new farming tool, and also the new credit."
The value of data is not limited to price discovery. At a processing workshop in Qianjiang District, Chongqing, a reporter observed that through the platform's "production-sales matching" function, the factory could accurately forecast order demand for the next three months, dynamically adjusting the production schedule for drying, slicing, and packaging. Workshop director Wang Qiang calculated: "Previously, we relied on experience for stock preparation, often running out during peak seasons and piling up inventory during slow seasons. Now, inventory turnover has increased by 40%, and waste has decreased by 18%." More importantly, the platform generates a unique "digital ID" for each batch of Youyoucao, containing information on origin, processing time, and logistics trajectory. Consumers can scan a QR code to view the entire chain of data.
This digital leap is reshaping the rural economic ecosystem in the Hubei-Chongqing border region. According to platform statistics, within six months of its launch, it facilitated online transactions for Youyoucao exceeding 80 million yuan, driving an average income increase of 3,200 yuan for farmers in core production areas. Meanwhile, the "growth model" data accumulated by the platform is now providing reverse guidance for breeding. By analyzing Youyoucao data from different altitudes and slopes, the research team has screened out two new high-content varieties, which are currently undergoing national variety approval.
However, the data-driven approach has not been without resistance. Some elderly herbal farmers were skeptical of "machines replacing eyes," believing that "data is static, while experience is dynamic." In response, the platform established a dedicated "data translator" role, employing local young people fluent in the local dialect to convert complex charts into dialect-based "planting guides." In Chetian Township, Youyang County, 65-year-old herbal farmer Chen Degui initially refused to install sensors, only actively requesting to join after seeing his neighbor's Youyoucao fetch high prices backed by data. "With data, you have to believe it. It has a better memory than people," he said with a laugh to reporters.
On a broader level, the Youyoucao Hubei-Chongqing Big Data Platform has become a "digital advisor" for local governments in formulating industrial policies. Liu Zhiqiang, Deputy Director of the Enshi Prefecture Agriculture and Rural Bureau, revealed that based on platform data, they are planning a "Spatial Layout of Youyoucao Advantageous Production Areas" to avoid low-level redundant construction. "In the past, decisions were made by gut feeling, easily leading to a 'rush in, rush out' scenario. Now with data, we can precisely know which townships are suitable for what to grow, how much to grow, and who to sell to."
From a wild mountain herb to a data asset, the story of Youyoucao might just be a microcosm of China's rural digital transformation. When big data truly sinks down to the fields, it changes not only transaction efficiency but also the millennia-old agricultural logic of "living at the mercy of the elements." As Li Wei put it: "We aren't just putting a label on Youyoucao; we are creating a digital archive for it. This archive allows it to leave the mountains with dignity."
