Deep in the mountainous border region between Chongqing and Hubei, a wild medicinal herb known as "Youyou Grass" is quietly becoming a testing ground for big data-empowered traditional agriculture. In early autumn this year, a reporter joined a joint research team from the agricultural departments of Hubei and Chongqing, venturing into the heart of the Wuling Mountains to witness how this unassuming little plant is transforming from a "mountain product" into a "digital asset" through the power of data flow.
Youyou Grass, scientifically known as Gynostemma pentaphyllum and locally called "Seven-Leaf Gall" in western Hubei and eastern Chongqing, has been collected for generations by Miao and Tujia herbal farmers. In the past, due to information barriers, the trade of Youyou Grass long relied on middlemen who suppressed prices. Farmers worked hard all year but earned little. However, a "data storm" in 2024 is changing all that.
In Lichuan City, Enshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, a gray-white building named the "Hubei-Chongqing Youyou Grass Big Data Center" has risen. Stepping into the lobby, a giant screen displays real-time data on the planting area, soil moisture, market prices, and logistics routes of Youyou Grass from four counties across two provinces (Fengjie and Wushan in Chongqing, Lichuan and Xianfeng in Hubei). This is China's first cross-provincial big data platform for a single variety of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs.
"In the past, collecting Youyou Grass relied on experience; now, it relies on algorithms," said Zhang Mingyuan, the platform's director and a former professor at Chongqing University's School of Computer Science, pointing to a red warning curve on the screen. "Last month, due to continuous rainfall in Fengjie, Chongqing, brown spot disease appeared on Youyou Grass leaves. Our satellite remote sensing data detected it three full days earlier than the farmers could see it with their naked eyes. The system automatically pushed a warning, and we coordinated with local agricultural technology stations to guide the spraying of biological agents, ultimately saving fresh grass worth about 8 million yuan."
The value of data goes beyond disaster prevention. In the trading segment, the platform introduced a "direct-from-origin plus auction" model. After farmers sort their harvested Youyou Grass, they upload sample images and test reports via a mobile app. The system automatically generates a suggested base price based on historical transaction prices, current inventory, and national herbal market trends. Buyers (pharmaceutical factories, wholesalers) then inspect the goods remotely and bid through the platform. In August, a batch of high-quality Youyou Grass from an elderly farmer in Wuxi County, Chongqing, was matched through the platform and sold at a price 15% higher per kilogram than the local purchase price, directly connecting with a traditional Chinese medicine enterprise in Guangzhou.
"This is not just about price transparency; it's about rebuilding trust," said Liu Jianguo, vice president of the Hubei Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Association, who accompanied the team. "Previously, outside merchants were reluctant to buy in large quantities for fear of adulteration. Now, every batch has blockchain traceability—from the harvesting location and drying environment to pesticide residue tests—all clear at a glance. Big data has turned 'Youyou Grass' into 'standardized grass.'"
However, this transformation has not been without pain. In Xinglong Town, Fengjie County, Chongqing, a village Party secretary who requested anonymity admitted that over 70% of the local medicinal herb farmers are over 60 years old, and many do not know how to use smartphones, let alone upload data or participate in auctions. "The platform is a good thing, but someone needs to help them cover that last mile." To address this, the governments of Hubei and Chongqing jointly launched a "data grid worker" system, assigning a young person to each village to teach farmers how to use the system step by step and to collect offline data.
Another impact of big data is the adjustment of planting structures. Three years of data accumulated on the platform clearly shows that Youyou Grass grown on north-facing slopes above 800 meters in altitude has significantly higher gypenoside content and commands a clear market premium. Consequently, a number of cooperatives have begun proactively guiding farmers to relocate to "data-recommended production areas." A "data adoption" model has even emerged, where consumers can adopt one square meter of Youyou Grass through the platform, watch its growth process live, and receive processed products upon maturity.
As night falls, the mountains along the Hubei-Chongqing border are sharply silhouetted by the lights of the data center. At the end of the interview, Professor Zhang Mingyuan said, "Youyou Grass is just the beginning. We are now replicating this 'data-driven plus cross-provincial collaboration' model to more varieties like coptis chinensis and gastrodia elata. The traditional Chinese medicinal herb resources of Southwest China should no longer lie dormant in the mountains."
From a single plant to an entire industrial chain, big data is redefining the meaning of "living off the mountains." And the story of Youyou Grass may well be the most vivid footnote to China's rural digital economy.
