Amid the misty mountains of Enshi, Hubei, a wild herb called "Youyoucao" is quietly reshaping the economic landscape along the Hubei-Chongqing border. In the past, this medicinal plant was considered a "weather-dependent" sideline due to unstable yields and poor market access. Today, with the intervention of the "Hubei-Chongqing Big Data" platform, every link of Youyoucao’s journey—from the fields to urban pharmacies—is being redefined by data.
"We used to pick Youyoucao and wait for herb dealers to come around, with prices dictated by them," said Lao Zhou, a grower in Hongchiba Town, Wuxi County, Chongqing, pointing to his lush green Youyoucao fields on the hillside. But this spring, he checked real-time price fluctuations on the national Chinese herbal medicine market via the "Hubei-Chongqing Youyoucao Big Data Platform" on his phone. Through the platform’s matchmaking, he secured a guaranteed purchase agreement with a pharmaceutical company in Hubei. "Now I have confidence. I dare to expand my planting area."
The catalyst for this transformation was the "Youyoucao Industry Digital Collaboration Project," jointly launched by Hubei and Chongqing in 2023. The core of the project is to use big data technology to break down "information silos" across the production, supply, and sales chains of both regions. According to Li Ming, associate researcher at the Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences and project lead, the team has deployed over 200 environmental monitoring points across 12 counties and districts in western Hubei and eastern Chongqing. These points collect real-time data on soil, climate, and pests, which is then combined with historical yield and market price models to build a "digital twin system for the entire Youyoucao industry chain."
"Big data isn’t just cold numbers; it’s a new farming tool for our farmers," Li Ming demonstrated at the Youyoucao Big Data Center in Lichuan City, Enshi Prefecture. On the screen, real-time data on Youyoucao planting areas, growth indices, warehouse inventory, logistics routes, and downstream pharmaceutical procurement demands from both Hubei and Chongqing were displayed as heat maps and dynamic line charts. The system can even predict the optimal harvesting window for the next two weeks, with an error margin of no more than three days.
The value of data is being validated in the market. Chen Fang, head of a Youyoucao cooperative in Youyang County, Chongqing, told reporters that last year, through the product traceability information released on the platform, their dried Youyoucao was purchased in full by a traditional Chinese medicine processing plant in Guangdong at a price 15% higher than the market average. "What they valued was that every batch of our product had complete data from sowing to drying. That’s more effective than any advertisement."
From a broader perspective, the exploration of "Youyoucao Hubei-Chongqing Big Data" reflects the urgency and feasibility of China’s agricultural digital transformation. For a long time, the cultivation of Chinese medicinal herbs has faced challenges of being "small, scattered, and chaotic," with supply-demand mismatches leading to drastic price fluctuations, making it hard for farmers to increase income and for pharmaceutical companies to source raw materials. Cross-provincial big data collaboration is now breaking down administrative barriers, enabling more optimal allocation of production factors across a wider area.
According to project estimates, in the year since the big data system went live, the average income of Youyoucao growers in Hubei and Chongqing has increased by 18.6%, and the time for buyers to source herbs has been reduced by over 40%. More importantly, data-driven precision farming has reduced the overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and the authenticity index of Youyoucao has improved by 12 percentage points.
The success of the "Youyoucao Hubei-Chongqing Big Data" model is attracting widespread attention. At the recently concluded "2024 China Agricultural Big Data Summit," the project was listed as a "Typical Case of Digitalization for Rural Revitalization." Liu Tao, deputy director of the Enshi Prefecture Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau in Hubei, stated in his speech: "In the next step, we will upgrade the Youyoucao big data platform into the 'Wuling Mountain Big Data Center for Chinese Medicinal Herbs,' covering more varieties like Coptis chinensis and Codonopsis pilosula. We want data to become the 'golden carrying pole' for the shared prosperity of mountain communities."
As the sun sets, Lao Zhou stands on his field ridge, data streams still flickering on his phone screen. Behind him, Youyoucao sways gently in the breeze, as if telling the new story of an ancient industry in the digital age. From the fields to the cloud, this revolution has only just begun.
