This company, which started with traditional Chinese medicinal herb cultivation and deep processing, recently announced the full integration of an artificial intelligence system. From field management to market forecasting, AI is becoming its "second brain." This news has sparked heated discussion among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in both regions—while big tech firms are still chasing large-scale models, how can regional enterprises use AI to overtake on the curve?
Youyou Grass's transformation did not happen overnight. Last autumn, the company's founder, Lao Chen, attended an industry summit in Chongqing and was struck by a set of data: nearly 30% of traditional Chinese medicinal herb products in the Hubei-Chongqing region are either unsold or sold at low prices each year due to a lack of precise market insights. Meanwhile, on e-commerce platforms, prices for certain authentic herbs were skyrocketing, with middlemen reaping huge profits. "The information gap is the profit gap, but relying on manual market research simply can't keep up," Lao Chen recalled.
The turning point came early this year. Youyou Grass partnered with a Shenzhen-based AI startup to develop the "Hubei-Chongqing Herb Farmer Brain" system. This system integrates meteorological data, soil sensors, real-time pricing from national traditional Chinese medicinal herb trading platforms, and even scrapes social media for trending topics on health and wellness. The AI can predict price fluctuations for a specific herb up to three months in advance, with an error margin of less than 5%. What has drawn even more industry attention is that Youyou Grass has opened up this AI capability to cooperatives and individual farmers in both Hubei and Chongqing. In a pilot village in Enshi, Hubei, farmer Lao Zhang received an AI-pushed planting suggestion via a mobile app: reduce the area for Codonopsis pilosula and increase the planting of Polygonatum sibiricum. Three months later, the price of Codonopsis pilosula plummeted, while the purchase price for Polygonatum sibiricum rose by 40%. Lao Zhang said, "I used to think AI was something for big city companies, but now I find it more useful than the local agricultural technician."
The case of Youyou Grass reveals a trend: the use of AI by enterprises is no longer just about "implementing systems" or "automation," but about embedding it into the capillaries of business operations. For the vast number of SMEs in Hubei and Chongqing, the path to AI adoption can be more pragmatic—not pursuing general-purpose large models, but focusing on vertical scenarios. For example, using AI to analyze local consumer data to guide product development; using AI to optimize logistics routes and reduce transportation costs in mountainous areas; or even using AI to generate short video scripts to help agricultural products sell on platforms like Douyin.
Of course, challenges remain. The technical lead at Youyou Grass admitted that weak network infrastructure in mountainous areas, high data collection costs, and low farmer trust in AI are all real obstacles. But Lao Chen believes this is precisely where regional enterprises have an opportunity: "Big companies look down on these 'dirty and tiring' tasks. If we do them well, they become our moat."
In a tea house at the Hubei-Chongqing border, several SME owners are gathered around Lao Chen, seeking advice. The conversation has shifted from "Will AI replace humans?" to "How can AI help us make more money?" Pointing to the rolling mountains outside the window, Lao Chen said, "Youyou Grass is just the beginning. Every enterprise on this land will eventually have to learn to work with AI."
