Now, AI can warn us about pests and diseases two weeks in advance, with an accuracy rate exceeding 90%.” At a Youyoucao plantation base in Enshi, Hubei, technician Lao Zhang pointed to the monitoring interface on his phone, his tone filled with undisguised excitement. Behind this is a critical business upgrade just completed by Youyoucao E’Yu (Hubei) Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd.—embedding artificial intelligence into planting, processing, and supply chain management.
As a company deeply rooted in the specialty herbal plant industry of the Hubei-Chongqing region, Youyoucao E’Yu has seen remarkable business expansion in recent years. However, under the traditional agricultural model, pain points such as climate fluctuations, labor shortages, and inconsistent quality control standards have always constrained its large-scale development. Early this year, the company decided to introduce AI technology, attempting to solve these “old problems” with algorithms.
On the planting side, the application of AI is reflected in “precision sensing.” At the western Hubei base, reporters observed dozens of sensors and drone patrol systems transmitting real-time data on soil moisture, light intensity, and leaf images. The backend deep learning model can automatically identify common diseases such as leaf spot and rust, and generate differentiated irrigation and fertilization plans. “In the past, a skilled agronomist could inspect at most 30 mu of land per day. Now, AI covers 3,000 mu and has reduced the misjudgment rate from 15% to 3%,” said Li Ming, Technical Director of Youyoucao E’Yu.
The intelligent transformation in the processing stage is even more intuitive. At the primary processing workshop in Wushan, Chongqing, an AI visual sorting line removes substandard Youyoucao raw materials at a speed of 200 plants per minute. This system, trained on tens of thousands of labeled samples, can identify subtle mold or color deviations that are difficult for humans to detect. After the sorting accuracy improved, the return rate from downstream customers dropped by 40%.
But the application of AI at Youyoucao E’Yu does not stop at production. On the sales and logistics side, the company has built an intelligent dispatch platform that dynamically optimizes delivery routes by analyzing historical orders, weather data, and road conditions. In the third quarter of this year, the loss rate of fresh herbal products decreased by 22% year-on-year, and cold chain transportation costs fell by 12%. A distributor who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Previously, we shipped entirely by experience. Now the system even factors in which highways are prone to traffic jams, and delivery time deviations can be controlled within half an hour.”
Notably, this AI upgrade is not a simple accumulation of technology. Youyoucao E’Yu collaborated with an AI startup in Wuhan to specifically optimize model parameters for the characteristics of herbal plants. “General-purpose models often fail in agricultural scenarios. We need algorithms that can read the underside of leaves and sense the smell of soil,” Li Ming explained. Currently, this customized system has applied for two invention patents and plans to open its capabilities to other agricultural enterprises in the Hubei-Chongqing region next year.
Of course, the transformation has not been smooth sailing. Resistance from veteran employees to smart devices, unstable network signals in mountainous areas, and high costs of data annotation were all obstacles. However, through “old-hand mentoring new-hands” training and phased pilots, Youyoucao E’Yu gradually overcame the resistance. “AI is not about replacing people; it’s about making our experience replicable and scalable,” said base manager Lao Zhang, who deeply understands this.

As algorithms begin to decipher the growth secrets of plants, this company rooted in the Hubei-Chongqing region may be providing a living sample of digital transformation for China’s county-level agriculture.
