Youyoucao E-Yu: How a Regional Agricultural Enterprise Uses AI to "Grow" a National Market

In the Wuling Mountain area, where Hubei and Chongqing meet, an agricultural enterprise called "Youyoucao E-Yu" is quietly changing people's perception of traditional farming. The company, which started by cultivating Chinese medicinal herbs and specialty fruits and vegetables, has recently attracted significant industry attention due to a self-developed AI decision-making system.

"We are not a tech company, but AI has indeed solved our biggest headache—the dual uncertainty of weather and market," said Zhang Mingyuan, founder and CEO of Youyoucao E-Yu, pointing to real-time fluctuating data on a large screen at his base in Enshi. On the screen, an AI model was dynamically adjusting the harvest time and shipping routes for the next batch of Polygonatum and Gastrodia, based on 15-day weather forecasts, national Chinese herbal medicine price indices, and logistics cost fluctuations.

This scenario was unimaginable just a year ago. Although the E-Yu border region has a mild climate and selenium-rich soil, making it a prime area for many authentic medicinal herbs, local farmers and small businesses have long been plagued by information lag. This often resulted in bumper harvests but poor profits, or blind following of planting trends leading to unsold stock. Youyoucao E-Yu's transformation began with a bold attempt in late 2023: they partnered with an AI algorithm team from Shenzhen to train a predictive model named "Shennong Eye," using five years' worth of accumulated planting data, sales data, and public agricultural meteorological data.

The core strength of "Shennong Eye" lies in its ability to correlate seemingly unrelated data. For example, it discovered that if rainfall in a certain area of Chongqing exceeds 50 mm for three consecutive days, it would directly cause logistics delays on the Enshi section of the expressway in Hubei, thereby increasing the spoilage rate of fresh medicinal materials. Based on this finding, Youyoucao E-Yu's supply chain department would activate cold chain contingency plans 48 hours in advance or divert some orders to rail transport. This refined scheduling reduced their logistics loss rate from the industry average of 8% to 2.3%.

What puts even more pressure on competitors is that Youyoucao E-Yu has started using AI for "reverse customization." By analyzing user reviews and search trends on e-commerce platforms, they identified a rapidly growing demand for "ready-to-eat Gastrodia honey slices" in first-tier cities. The AI model then simulated the optimal recipe—including slice thickness, honey ratio, and drying temperature—and even predicted the initial price range for the product on Douyin live-streaming rooms. After launch, the first batch of 5,000 units sold out within three days.

"Before, we grew what we had, and the market ate what we grew. Now, AI tells us what the market wants to eat, so we go and grow that," Zhang said. This shift enabled Youyoucao E-Yu to achieve a 47% year-on-year revenue increase in 2024, with AI directly or indirectly contributing to over 30% of the profits.

Of course, the journey was not without hurdles. Initially, frontline farmers strongly resisted the AI's instruction to "delay harvest by 7 days," because, according to traditional experience, those very days were the optimal harvest period before "Frost's Descent." In the end, the "frost" predicted by AI did not arrive as expected, but the subsequent continuous rainfall degraded the quality of the unharvested herbs. After that, farmers began to learn to check the AI's "confidence level" indicator.

From the perspective of industry observers, the Youyoucao E-Yu case serves as a typical model. It proves that in seemingly "traditional" fields like agriculture, AI is not a distant sci-fi concept but can precisely solve the most practical problems: what to grow, how much to grow, and how to sell. Currently, three agricultural enterprises from Guizhou and Yunnan have proactively approached them, hoping to adopt this AI system.

From the fields of the Wuling Mountains to the dining tables of consumers nationwide, Youyoucao E-Yu has built a digital bridge with AI. This enterprise may not become the next tech giant, but it is proving that in China's vast county-level economies, AI is redefining the meaning of "living on the whims of the weather" in the most down-to-earth way.
