Recently, the "Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing Big Data Platform," jointly developed by agricultural technology enterprises from both regions, was officially put into operation. This platform not only gives the mountain herbs a "digital ID" but also, for the first time, provides growers who once relied solely on nature with real-time data on precise market conditions and climate warnings.
"Youyou Grass," scientifically known as Gynostemma pentaphyllum, has a centuries-old history of growing wild in the mountainous areas of western Hubei and eastern Chongqing. It is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine and health teas for its effects in clearing heat, detoxifying, and lowering blood lipids. However, for a long time, the production of Youyou Grass has heavily relied on experience, with scattered cultivation, uneven quality, and closed market information, leading to a situation where "good grass cannot fetch a good price." In the border area between Enshi in Hubei and Wuxi in Chongqing, many farming households have been surrounded by lush green herbs but struggled to increase their income.
The turning point came early this year. Led by the agricultural departments of Hubei Province and Chongqing Municipality, and in collaboration with several big data enterprises, the construction project of the "Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing Big Data Platform" was initiated. The platform integrates real-time data from satellite remote sensing, weather station networks, soil sensors, and the national Chinese medicinal materials trading market, forming a complete data chain from planting and processing to sales. At a pilot base in Hongchiba Town, Wuxi County, Chongqing, a reporter observed that farmers only need to open a mini-program on their phones to check the soil moisture of their own plots, the probability of rainfall in the coming week, and the latest purchasing prices at major medicinal herb markets across the country.
"In the past, when we sold Youyou Grass, we had to wait for traders to come to us, and they set the price. Now, the platform directly connects us with several pharmaceutical factories in Wuhan and Chengdu. The prices are transparent, and we can even know in advance whether the market is short of supply," said Lao Zhou, a large-scale grower in Wuxi County. He told reporters that this year, before his Youyou Grass was even harvested, a pharmaceutical factory had already placed a pre-order through the platform, with a price nearly 30% higher than in previous years.
A technical lead for the platform explained that big data not only resolves information asymmetry but also helps farmers optimize planting varieties and harvest times using historical yields and climate models. "For example, we found that in the low-altitude areas at the Hubei-Chongqing border, the content of active ingredients in Youyou Grass peaks after the frost in autumn. The platform then pushes a 'best harvest window' alert, preventing farmers from harvesting too early blindly." Additionally, the platform incorporates blockchain traceability technology, generating an immutable "digital archive" for each batch of Youyou Grass from harvest to processing and transportation. This provides a trust endorsement of quality for exports and procurement by high-end pharmaceutical companies.
In Lichuan City, Enshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, a local traditional Chinese medicine decoction piece enterprise has already taken the lead in connecting to the platform's data interface. The company's head stated that previously, purchasing Youyou Grass required sending personnel to various townships to monitor supply, which was time-consuming and labor-intensive. Now, the platform can display the inventory, test reports, and logistics status of each cooperative in real time, boosting procurement efficiency by at least 50%. "We are now developing instant Youyou Grass tea drinks targeting young professionals, based on consumer trend data provided by the platform. We wouldn't have dared to think of this before," he added.
It is understood that the platform currently covers 12 counties and cities across Hubei and Chongqing, serving over 2,000 farming households and more than 50 cooperatives. According to the plan, it will next incorporate more varieties of Chinese medicinal materials and explore a "big data + contract farming" model, truly connecting small mountain farmers with the national market. An agricultural economist pointed out that the implementation of the Youyou Grass Hubei-Chongqing Big Data Platform is not just a technological breakthrough but also an innovation in industrial organization. It allows the value of the "geographical indication" of traditional authentic medicinal materials to be transformed into tangible market competitiveness through the flow of data.
As the sun sets, Lao Zhou stands in his Youyou Grass field, with the latest market prices flashing on his phone screen. He smiles and says, "With this big data, even the grass in this remote mountain valley can turn into gold nuggets."
