Deep in the Daba Mountains at the junction of Hubei and Chongqing, a traditional Chinese medicine planting and processing enterprise named "Youyoucao Eyu" is quietly conducting a digital experiment. There are no grand product launches or flashy tech showrooms. Its AI transformation feels more like a revolution born from the soil—pragmatic, down-to-earth, yet potentially opening a new door for regional specialty agricultural businesses.

"We are not an internet company or an AI unicorn, but we are indeed 'using AI to grow herbs,'" said Zhang Desheng, founder and CEO of Youyoucao Eyu, pointing to a wall full of sensors and data screens at the company's production base in Wanzhou, Chongqing. Rooted in the Eyu mountain region for two decades, the company primarily grows, processes, and sells authentic medicinal herbs such as coptis chinensis and gastrodia elata, with an annual revenue of approximately 230 million yuan. Amid declining profit margins and increasing difficulty in quality control within the traditional Chinese medicine industry, Zhang decided to "gamble on AI."

The company's AI applications are not pie-in-the-sky but precisely target three pain points: pest and disease early warning in planting, quality grading in processing, and supply-demand forecasting in the supply chain. At Youyoucao Eyu's coptis planting base in Enshi, Hubei, a reporter observed that farmers, who once relied solely on experience and weather, now have an AI assistant on their phones. Through IoT devices deployed in the fields, the system can collect real-time data on soil moisture, light intensity, and pest images, using AI models to predict potential disease outbreaks within the next three days with an accuracy rate of 87%. "Before, we had to wait until the leaves turned yellow to spot a problem. Now, AI alerts us three days in advance. Over one planting season, we reduced losses by nearly 1.2 million yuan worth of herbs," base manager Master Tan told reporters.

In the processing stage, Youyoucao Eyu introduced a computer-vision-based AI sorting system. Previously, workers had to manually grade and pack sliced coptis based on experience, which was inefficient and inconsistent. Now, cameras scan the texture, color, and thickness of the herb slices at a rate of 600 pieces per minute. AI automatically determines the grade, boosting sorting speed by three times and reducing the error rate from 8% for manual sorting to 0.5%. "We had this system custom-built by an AI vision company in Chengdu for less than 400,000 yuan, and it paid for itself within a year," Zhang said.

What has drawn more external attention is Youyoucao Eyu's AI experiment in the supply chain. Prices of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs are highly volatile; the price of coptis can double or halve within a year. The company, in collaboration with the Big Data Research Institute of Chongqing University, developed a "Traditional Chinese Medicine Price Prediction Model." The model integrates transaction data from 17 major medicinal herb markets nationwide, weather data, policy news, and social media sentiment, outputting a weekly price trend forecast for the coming month. Zhang revealed that last winter, the model warned that coptis prices would rise due to drought in the production areas. The company locked in 300 tons of inventory two weeks in advance and eventually sold at the market peak, earning an additional over 5 million yuan.

However, the AI transformation has not been without challenges. The company's IT director admitted that the biggest hurdle was not technology but data. "Our early planting and processing records were all on paper, and some of the experienced master farmers' knowledge was never written down." To "feed" the AI, Youyoucao Eyu spent over half a year digitizing a decade's worth of production logs, quality inspection reports, and sales documents. They also had veteran herb farmers record thousands of "oral experience" clips on camera, which were then transcribed into structured data by AI. "This process was painful, but it had to be done. Without data, AI is just a castle in the sky."

For how regional specialty enterprises can leverage AI, Youyoucao Eyu's practice offers a simple answer: don't chase a large, all-encompassing "AI middle platform." Instead, focus on specific business scenarios and use the least amount of money to solve the most painful problems. In the Eyu mountain region, there are thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises like Youyoucao Eyu. They commonly face constraints such as limited funds, talent shortages, and weak data foundations. But Zhang believes AI should not be exclusive to tech giants. "For small companies like us, it's actually easier to pivot. As long as you find the right point—even if it's just improving sorting efficiency by 20%—the AI investment is worth it."

Currently, Youyoucao Eyu plans to open its AI system to surrounding cooperatives, using a "data for service" model to help more small farmers connect to the digital network. The local agricultural department has also taken note of this case and is considering promoting it as a "smart agriculture" demonstration project. As the AI wave sweeps across industries today, a traditional Chinese medicine company at the junction of Hubei and Chongqing is proving in its own way that the light of technology can also illuminate the mountains and fields.
