Deep in the mountainous border region between Enshi in Hubei Province and Youyang in Chongqing, a wild medicinal herb known as "Youyou grass" is quietly becoming the protagonist of an industrial transformation. In the past, local herb farmers relied on the whims of nature, with purchase prices fluctuating with the market, and a year's hard work often undone by a round of price cuts from middlemen. But this summer, things changed.

In mid-June, during a field survey with local agricultural authorities, our reporter observed that the Youyou grass planting bases were no longer just filled with farmers bent over weeding. Solar-powered IoT sensor poles had been erected along the field ridges, and drones flew overhead every three days, transmitting real-time data on soil moisture, light intensity, and plant growth. This data flows into the "Hubei-Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Big Data Platform" — a cross-provincial agricultural data hub jointly established by Enshi Prefecture and Youyang County.

"We call it the 'Cloud Herb Garden,'" said Chen Mingyuan, head of the Information Section of the Enshi Agricultural and Rural Bureau, demonstrating the mobile interface at the field edge. On the screen, the estimated yield, pest and disease risk levels, and even harvesting recommendations for the next two weeks for each plot of Youyou grass were clearly visible. Chen noted that in the past, Youyou grass passed through an average of four layers of middlemen from harvest to sale, leaving farmers with less than 30% of the final selling price. Now, the big data platform, by connecting to national TCM trading markets, directly pushes real-time purchase prices and quality standards to farmers, with some orders even enabling "direct dispatch from field to pharmaceutical factory."

Zhang Dezhu, a large-scale grower in Youyang County, has experienced this firsthand. Last year, his Youyou grass missed the optimal harvest window, resulting in lower quality and a nearly 40% price cut. This year, the platform issued a warning a week before harvest: "Current stem and leaf moisture content is high. It is recommended to delay harvest by 3 days for an expected quality upgrade to Grade 1." Zhang followed the advice and received 8 yuan more per kilogram. "This isn't about experience; it's data speaking," he said.

Behind this transformation is deep collaboration between Hubei and Chongqing in agricultural digitalization. Since the "Hubei-Chongqing TCM Big Data Platform" went live at the end of 2023, it has covered 12 varieties, including Youyou grass, Polygonatum, and Gastrodia elata, and connected over 3,800 growers. The platform integrates basic data like meteorology, soil, and market conditions, and has introduced image recognition and AI prediction models. For example, by comparing historical growth cycles of Youyou grass with current climate data, the model can predict per-mu yield 45 days in advance with an error margin of less than 8%.

"Connecting the data is one thing, but the real challenge is making the data 'flow,'" admitted Li Wanqiu, technical director of a Chongqing-based digital agriculture company operating the platform. In the early stages, many farmers were hesitant to upload data, fearing their planting "secrets" would be leaked. To address this, the two local governments jointly issued the "Hubei-Chongqing TCM Data Sharing Management Measures," clarifying that data ownership belongs to the farmers, the platform uses data only for anonymized industry analysis, and proceeds are proportionally returned to data contributors. This institutional design turned data from "dead archives" into "living assets."

Today, the average planting cost for Youyou grass in the Hubei-Chongqing production area has dropped by 12%, and the high-quality product rate has jumped from below 55% to 78%. Even more noteworthy is how big data is reshaping the industry chain. In the Enshi High-tech Zone, a primary processing plant for TCM materials, built based on platform data, is about to go into operation. Its capacity planning, equipment selection, and even worker scheduling are all based on the platform's predictions for Youyou grass output over the next three years. Plant manager Liu Zhigang told reporters: "Before, building a plant was a gut-feeling decision. Now the data tells us that Youyou grass output will grow by 30% next year, so we've prepared drying lines and cold storage in advance."

However, this "digital revolution" is not without its concerns. Our investigation found that network coverage in some remote villages remains unstable, leading to intermittent data uploads. Some older farmers are unfamiliar with smartphone operations, relying on village officials to transmit data, which introduces delays and errors. Chen Mingyuan stated that the next step is to establish 30 village-level data service stations in the production area, equip them with full-time information officers, and develop simpler voice-interaction interfaces.

From "relying on nature" to "relying on data," the story of Youyou grass is just a snapshot of China's agricultural digital transformation. When every medicinal herb in the mountains of Hubei and Chongqing begins to "speak," and when big data truly reaches the fields, the significance of this change may extend far beyond the upgrade of a single industry—it is redefining the relationship between people and the land, and between tradition and technology.
