Lao Chen, a medicinal herb merchant from Youyang, Chongqing, found that the traditional "weather-dependent" pricing model left both farmers and buyers in a bind: bumper harvests led to price crashes, while lean years saw goods unavailable at any price. Meanwhile, Sister Li, head of a medicinal herb cooperative in Lichuan, Hubei, was struggling with inventory backlogs. The two met by chance at an industry exchange and sparked the idea of "using data to connect production, supply, and sales."
Today, this big data platform, jointly built by agricultural departments from both provinces and private enterprises, covers over 2,000 medicinal herb planting bases in the Wuling Mountain area. The platform uses satellite remote sensing to monitor planting areas, combines this with climate models to predict yields, and then matches real-time procurement demands from over 200 pharmaceutical companies nationwide.
