The story began late last year. Chen Mingyuan, founder of Youyoucao Eyu, witnessed an AI sorting robot working with precision on a traditional Chinese medicine production line at an industry exhibition—identifying over 200 herb pieces per minute with an error rate below 0.3%. Upon returning to the company, he immediately gathered the technical team and decided to introduce AI across the entire chain, from cultivation to warehousing. This was not a simple technology procurement but a deep transformation involving thousands of farmers and multiple planting bases.
"We first piloted the project at our coptis chinensis base in Enshi, Hubei," Wang Lei, technical director of Youyoucao Eyu, told reporters. The team used AI image recognition technology combined with decades of local planting logs to train a pest and disease warning model. In the past, farmers could only rely on experience to decide when to spray pesticides or harvest. Now, the AI can predict the probability of disease outbreaks three days in advance using drone inspections and soil sensor data. This June, the system successfully issued a warning for the spread of southern blight, preventing losses on nearly 100 mu of coptis chinensis.
What has drawn even more attention from the outside world is Youyoucao Eyu's AI application in the supply chain. The traditional Chinese medicine market has long suffered from the pain point of "non-standardization"—the same batch of herbs can have vastly different medicinal ingredient content depending on the origin and harvest time. Youyoucao Eyu collaborated with Chongqing University to develop a rapid detection model based on near-infrared spectroscopy. Some industry observers pointed out that Youyoucao Eyu's AI applications are currently concentrated at the "perception layer," still far from true "decision-making layer" AI. In response, Chen Mingyuan admitted that their next step will focus on breakthroughs in AI applications for formula optimization and herb traceability. "We are training a model that, based on the procurement needs of end-user pharmaceutical factories, can reversely recommend the best combination of origins and harvesting windows," he said. He believes this will be a key step for Youyoucao Eyu to transition from a "grower" to a "data service provider."

He thought for a moment and said, "Any company can buy an AI system, but the real challenge is embedding AI into the production habits of local people.
