Youyou Grass: Hubei and Chongqing Join Forces with Big Data to Break the 'Information Island' in TCM Supply Chain

Amid the mountains of Enshi, Hubei Province, a wild medicinal herb known as "Youyou Grass" is undergoing a data revolution. Recently, the "Youyou Grass · Big Data Traceability Platform," jointly launched by several agricultural technology companies from Hubei and Chongqing, officially went live in Wanzhou, Chongqing. This is not only the first full-chain data platform in Southwest China targeting authentic medicinal herbs but also marks a shift away from the traditional model of "relying on the weather" in the cultivation and circulation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

"In the past, purchasing herbs relied entirely on experience—which mountain produced good quality, which forest had ingredients meeting standards—all based on word of mouth and legwork," said Old Chen, a veteran herb broker with 20 years of experience at the Wanzhou TCM trading market, pointing to the platform interface on his phone. "Now, with a simple scan of the QR code, every step for Youyou Grass—from seedling cultivation, fertilization, and harvesting to drying and quality inspection—has data records. Buyers dare to place orders, and we dare to quote real prices."

"Youyou Grass" is not a single plant species but a collective term for multiple high-quality wild and imitation-wild medicinal herbs in western Hubei and eastern Chongqing, including Coptis chinensis, Gastrodia elata, and Polygonatum sibiricum. For a long time, these herbs have suffered from uneven quality and drastic price fluctuations due to their special growing environments and scattered cultivation. The intervention of big data technology is now rewriting this situation.

According to the project leader, the platform integrates meteorological satellite remote sensing, soil sensors, IoT warehouse monitoring, and blockchain transaction records, forming a complete data chain "from the field to the pharmacy." Taking Polygonatum sibiricum (Huangjing) as an example, the platform analyzes climate and market data from the past five years to predict the optimal harvest time this autumn, with an error margin of less than three days. During a trial run this year, this feature helped a cooperative in Hefeng County, Enshi Prefecture, reduce the loss rate of Polygonatum sibiricum by 18% and increase the average purchase price by 12%.

"Big data is not cold, lifeless numbers; it is a new farming tool in the hands of farmers," said the Chief Data Officer of a Chongqing-based agricultural technology company at the launch event. "We are training an AI model specifically for 'Youyou Grass.' In the future, it can identify leaf diseases, recommend fertilization plans, and even predict the medicinal compound content of a batch of herbs."

Notably, this big data platform is not a closed system. The agricultural and rural departments of Hubei and Chongqing have already connected it to the National Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Traceability Platform and plan to achieve data interoperability with Sichuan and Guizhou provinces next year. This means that in the future, when consumers buy a box of "Youyou Grass" series products at a pharmacy, scanning the QR code on the packaging will reveal which mountain it came from, who grew it, what fertilizers were used, and how many tests it underwent.

However, challenges remain. Inadequate network coverage in some remote mountainous areas and the low acceptance of smart devices among elderly growers are still hurdles to promotion. To address this, the project team, in collaboration with local village committees, has set up "data service stations" in concentrated herb-producing areas, staffed with dedicated personnel to help farmers input information. Additionally, the platform has introduced voice input and dialect recognition features to lower the barrier to use.

The integration of "Youyou Grass" with big data is injecting new vitality into the mountainous economy at the border of Hubei and Chongqing. Data shows that in the first half of this year, the transaction volume of herbs in the platform-covered areas increased by 27% year-on-year, with online-matched orders accounting for over 40% of the total for the first time. More importantly, the credit endorsement built through data accumulation has led multiple pharmaceutical companies to lock in supplies of high-quality "Youyou Grass" from premium production areas at prices 5% to 8% above the market average.

From the misty Wuling Mountains to the bustling Cuntan Port in Chongqing, the journey of a single "Youyou Grass" is no longer reliant solely on shoulder poles and trucks—it now has data as its "navigation." This may well be the most vivid illustration of traditional agriculture in the digital age.
