At a 100-acre intelligent warehousing base in Yubei District, Chongqing, workers are scanning bundles of "Youyoucao" medicinal herbs into the system using barcode scanners. The data flickering in real-time on the screen not only records the origin, moisture content, and pesticide residue test results of each batch of herbs but also connects planting bases in Enshi, Hubei, and Shizhu, Chongqing with hundreds of pharmaceutical enterprises nationwide. This is the scene on the first day of the launch of the "Youyoucao E-Yu" Big Data Platform — a digital experiment quietly underway, attempting to use data to unblock the "Ren and Du meridians" of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry in the Hubei-Chongqing region.

"Previously, purchasing herbs relied entirely on experience, prices fluctuated wildly, and there was a severe information asymmetry between herb farmers and merchants," project leader Wang Jianguo told reporters at the platform launch ceremony, pointing to the "Origin Price Heat Map" on the large screen. The mountainous border region between Hubei and Chongqing is a major production area for authentic Chinese medicinal herbs. However, for a long time, data silos along the chain from harvesting to circulation have led to mismatched supply and demand and high wastage rates. Youyoucao, a TCM trading enterprise deeply rooted in both regions for years, collaborated with a team from Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, spending 18 months to build this regional big data platform.

Reporters on-site observed that the platform's core functions include three major modules: "Origin Traceability," "Smart Pricing," and "Inventory Warning." Taking "Origin Traceability" as an example, data from the entire process — from planting, harvesting, and primary processing to warehousing — is automatically collected via IoT devices, generating an immutable "digital ID." By scanning the code, herb merchants can see the herb's complete history, even accessing soil and climate data from the planting site. "This resolves the long-standing 'trust crisis' in the TCM industry," commented Li Minghua, an expert from the Institute of Chinese Medicinal Materials at Southwest University. "Especially for traders like Youyoucao connecting a large number of small-scale farmers, data transparency can force upstream standardization and enhance the credit rating of the entire supply chain."

More noteworthy is the platform's deep application of "big data." The system's backend integrates the National Medical Products Administration's TCM standard database, real-time market conditions from major national TCM markets, and agricultural meteorological data from Hubei and Chongqing. Using machine learning models, the platform can predict the price trends of medicinal herbs for the next three months, with an error margin controlled within 8%. During the testing phase, this feature helped Coptis chinensis growers in Enshi avoid a risk of unsold stock caused by blind production expansion. "Previously, we relied on the weather for our livelihood; now, we rely on data," remarked a herb farmer who participated in the pilot program.

However, digital transformation hasn't been entirely smooth sailing. During interviews, reporters found that some herb farmers in remote mountainous areas were resistant to smart devices, believing "scanning codes is an unnecessary hassle." To address this, the Youyoucao team established a "data instructor" role to teach farmers how to use simple terminals hands-on. Furthermore, the initial investment in building the platform exceeded 20 million yuan, and achieving a profitable business model remains a challenge. Wang Jianguo revealed that operations are currently sustained mainly through membership fees and data service fees charged to pharmaceutical enterprises. Future plans include introducing blockchain technology to capitalize on data assets and exploring a "data-for-equity" cooperation model.

From a macro perspective, the launch of the "Youyoucao E-Yu" Big Data Platform reflects a microcosm of the Chinese TCM industry's transition from traditional farming to digital agriculture. According to the "2024 China TCM Market Analysis Report," the national TCM market scale has exceeded 300 billion yuan, but the digitalization penetration rate is less than 15%. As a key node connecting Southwest and Central China, this attempt by the Hubei-Chongqing region may provide a blueprint for the standardization and intelligentization of the national TCM supply chain. As an official from the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology remarked, "Data doesn't just flow on the platform; it is changing every decision made in herb fields thousands of miles away."
