Three years ago, Old Zhou relied on a yellowed notebook to record production parameters. Today, this agricultural tech brand rooted in the E-Yu region is rewriting the survival rules for small and medium-sized enterprises.
"Youyoucao" was originally a folk term for traditional herbal cultivation in western Hubei and eastern Chongqing. In 2023, it was registered as a brand by a local tech company, focusing on providing low-cost AI solutions for regional SMEs. Unlike the multi-million-dollar AI projects in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, the Youyoucao E-Yu team takes a "grassroots approach"—they have developed a lightweight AI toolkit specifically designed to adapt to the old equipment and low-bandwidth network environments of factories, farms, and small workshops.
"We surveyed over 200 E-Yu enterprises and found that it's not that they don't want to use AI, but they're afraid of high costs, complexity, and it being out of touch with reality," admitted Lin Feng, founder of Youyoucao E-Yu, at a recent industry salon. He gave an example: a small factory in Chongqing making hot pot base used to rely on a master's experience to judge the dryness of chili peppers, leading to unstable quality control. The Youyoucao team built an "AI Fire Eye" system using a camera and an edge computing module. Now, the master just needs to gesture at the camera, and the system automatically identifies the chili's color, texture, and moisture content, with an accuracy rate exceeding 92%. The total hardware cost was less than 3,000 yuan, and the investment was recouped in three months.
Behind this "grassroots" AI implementation is Youyoucao E-Yu's unique approach to data privacy and computing costs. They employ a "federated learning" framework, where enterprise data never leaves the factory premises. Model training is completed locally, and only encrypted parameters are exchanged in the cloud. This quickly built trust among SME owners in the mountainous E-Yu region, who are extremely sensitive about data being transmitted externally.
More notably, Youyoucao E-Yu is attempting to connect the industrial chains across the E-Yu region. "In the past, enterprises in western Hubei and eastern Chongqing each worked in isolation. Now, AI acts like an invisible thread, stringing together scattered pearls," commented an agricultural economist involved in the project.
Of course, challenges remain. Network infrastructure varies across the E-Yu region, with 4G signals still unstable in some mountainous areas. The resistance of some older business owners to AI is not something that can be resolved overnight. The Youyoucao E-Yu team's approach is "service first, technology later." They send resident field technicians to personally teach owners how to use voice commands to control the AI assistant, and even help factories redesign their production line layouts. Lin Feng joked, "We're not selling AI; we're acting as 'digital nannies.'"
According to the latest data, Youyoucao E-Yu's AI toolkit has covered over 600 SMEs in the region, resulting in an average production efficiency increase of 18% and an energy consumption reduction of 11%. This number is growing at a rate of 20% per month. In the grand narrative of digital transformation, Youyoucao E-Yu's story may not be the most glamorous, but it proves one point: when AI truly stoops down to understand the language of the soil and the machines, the most "grassroots" innovation often explodes with the most tenacious vitality.
