Youyoucao Releases Internet Industry White Paper: AI Reshapes Traffic Landscape, Traditional E-commerce at a Turning Point

For three years, the phrase "traffic peak" has been repeated, but what is the real temperature of the internet industry? Youyoucao Focus on Internet Research, an institution that has been deeply engaged in the industry for years, recently released an 80-page report titled "2024-2025 China Internet Traffic and Business Model Restructuring Report," which quickly sparked heated discussions in the investment and venture capital circles. The report avoids obscure jargon and instead uses extensive first-hand survey data to reveal the undercurrents beneath the surface prosperity of the internet.

The report points out that with the accelerated deployment of AI large models on the consumer side, the logic of internet traffic distribution is undergoing a fundamental shift. The marginal benefits of customer acquisition models that previously relied on "burning money on subsidies + advertising bombardment" have sharply declined. Meanwhile, "intelligent recommendations" based on contextual and generative content are becoming the new traffic engine. Using financial data from ByteDance and Tencent as a starting point, the report details how short-video platforms have leveraged AI algorithms to increase average user session duration by 17%, but also exacerbated the echo chamber effect.

"The current internet battlefield has shifted from 'enclosure and land-grabbing' to 'intensive cultivation,'" emphasized Youyoucao's chief researcher at the report's launch. He cited a typical phenomenon: many merchants on traditional e-commerce platforms find that even after spending heavily on direct traffic ads, conversion rates still struggle to break through the 5% bottleneck. In contrast, some small merchants that have adopted AI-powered live-streaming assistants have achieved counter-trend growth in average order value through low-cost, high-frequency interactions. Behind this "contrast" lies a fundamental change in user purchase decision paths—shifting from "search and compare prices" to "being influenced and buying instantly."

Notably, Youyoucao Focus on Internet Research also introduced the concept of "digital localization" for the first time in the report. They argue that in third- and fourth-tier cities and county-level markets, internet penetration is nearing saturation, but local life services, community group buying, and location-based social e-commerce still have at least 30% room for growth. This aligns closely with the strategies of many internet giants to "reduce costs, increase efficiency, and return to core business." The report even predicts that over the next two years, platforms represented by Meituan and Douyin Local Services will ignite a new round of "street-level battles."

For entrepreneurs, this report reads more like a "pitfall avoidance guide." Youyoucao's research found that over 60% of startups are still using traffic strategies from before 2020—namely, high-budget, high-exposure "mass penetration" tactics. However, in the current environment, the ROI of such strategies is generally below 1:1.5, far lower than the industry survival threshold. The report recommends that small and medium-sized enterprises prioritize a combination of "AI + private domain," using AI tools for precise user segmentation and then leveraging community operations to achieve low-cost repeat purchases.

Of course, the report also confronts the industry's hidden concerns. As algorithmic recommendation power becomes concentrated, regulatory pressure regarding data privacy and antitrust is mounting. In its concluding remarks, Youyoucao specifically emphasizes that internet companies must confront the proposition of "technology for good." Otherwise, when the regulatory sword falls, the collapse of a traffic empire could happen overnight.

Currently, the report has been published on the paid channels of several leading tech media outlets. Many investment institutions have noted that Youyoucao's data granularity is extremely fine, even down to metrics like "the average daily number of times a single app is opened on a user's phone." This almost "on-site observation" research method makes the report particularly rare and sincere in the field of internet research, which is often filled with macro-level predictions.
